Types of Research Degrees
Master by Research (MRes)
The MRes is a relatively new qualification, which provides an opportunity for extensive research training and subject-specific advanced knowledge.
Two-thirds of this programme consists of a major research project which allows for the development of a significant specialism in a particular subject. This is complemented by options drawn from the school's portfolio of master's courses, which complement the research.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The MPhil qualification requires you to critically investigate and show a comprehensive understanding of appropriate research methods. It is assessed by the submission and examination of a shorter thesis than that required for PhD, setting out the results of an original, individual programme of investigational work. Unlike a PhD, an MPhil does not constitute an advancement of knowledge. Successful completion of the MPhil, including the preparation of a detailed plan for a doctoral research project, may be followed by registration for a PhD.
Doctoral Degrees
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
At the highest level PhD students will produce a thesis which must form a distinct contribution to knowledge and afford evidence of originality. Students are required to register initially for the MPhil with transfer to the PhD normally occurring after one year, subject to the completion of satisfactory work. The period of time involved in completing a PhD is usually at least three years full-time and four years part-time.
Assessment is based upon an oral examination and examination of the final thesis. Students registered on Integrated PhD programmes will also submit a thesis towards the award of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
The EngD has a research component similar to the PhD, and also incorporates appropriate professional training and instruction. Its usual duration is four years, but it may be undertaken in three years if the student has previously spent at least one year on appropriate work at postgraduate level, including some research. Progress throughout the programme is monitored.
Professional Doctoral Programmes
These programmes relate to specific professional areas and incorporate a taught element. Professional doctoral programmes are available in:
